Chelsea are closing in on Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic as they look to give number one Robert Sanchez competition following the exit of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Blues will first play £12million instantly before a further £2million which has been structured as add-ons to bring the goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge this week.

The Serb has been a standout performer for New England Revolution, keeping seven clean sheets in 22 MLS games this term.

He will become the eighth signing of the summer and take spending almost £400million in yet another summer of wild spending for the Blues.

Chelsea have sold and loaned 12 first-team players but did not expect to lose goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga as he left for Madrid just a day before the start of the new Premier League season, leaving Chelsea with the need to sign a new goalkeeper.

In other news, Chelsea will be hoping that the injury to midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka after he walked out of the game against West Ham on crutches is not as serious as it looked.

The 19-year-old was the star of the show in east London after scoring his first professional goal but minutes later he went from ecstasy to pain after injuring his knee.

He will add to the likes of Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah and Armando Broja who are battling to return to full fitness.

Chelsea lost to West Ham United and will hope they get the win when they host newly promoted Luton Town in the Premier League on Friday night.
