Charlton Athletic defender Lloyd Jones has been nominated for January’s League One Player of the Month award, the week after signing a new contract with the Addicks amid reports of transfer interest from Wycombe Wanderers and Oxford United.

Jones, who was also shortlisted for the award in August, helped Charlton Athletic to three wins and three clean sheets last month. He also scored in the 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers, which saw Ian Evatt leave his post with the Trotters.

The 29-year-old will compete with Blackpool star Tom Bloxham, Burton Albion forward Rumarn Burrell and Leyton Orient midfielder Jamie Donley for the Player of the Month accolade. The winner will be announced on Friday and is judged by a panel of Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies.

Securing a new deal for Jones was one of the Addicks’ most important January moves, despite the arrival of new faces at The Valley. The defender’s contract had been due to expire this summer, which had prompted links with League One rivals the Chairboys and Championship side the U’s.

Jones has now committed his future to Charlton Athletic until the summer of 2027. The defender has played 22 third tier matches so far this term. He found himself on the scoresheet against Wigan Athletic on the first day of the season, as well as against Bolton Wanderers last month.

After committing his future to Charlton, Jones told the club website: "I’m buzzing to sign this contract and I’m looking forward to what the future holds. I’ve loved my time at Charlton so far and I feel like I’ve found a real home here and am playing the best football of my career under the gaffer.

"We’ve got a great group here who are all really together and we’re very clear with what we want to achieve this season. We believe we’re building something and I’m really happy to be part of it."

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones had maintained his confidence that the defender would stay at the club despite transfer talk of an exit. Wycombe Wanderers sit second in League One and are chasing promotion while the Oxford United are 16th in the Championship after an impressive turnaround in form under new boss Gary Rowett.

Nathan Jones praises Addicks star

Speaking to the South London Press, Nathan Jones said: “I don’t think there was any doubt. I’ve got a very good relationship with Lloyd. I’ve signed him at Luton. Lloyd’s turned into the player I always knew that he could. He’s had that potential, but you can’t say potential at 29.

“He’s had to knuckle down. What you want to achieve, what you want to be? This is the basics you do. You do them well and then bring out everything else you do.

“Then you can be a top footballer. He’s not achieved what he should have yet, but this gives him a real good opportunity. We’re delighted to get it done.

“It’s so important to us in all aspects around the place. We build environments and it takes more than just a good footballer and a good athlete to build an environment. We’ve got so many good people around the club now and we’re reaping the benefit.

“The four games he played for me last year he was outstanding and then he got injured. Since I’ve taken over Lloyd Jones has been a credit to himself and that’s why we’ve offered him a long-term deal. That’s why we’re glad to get it done and that’s why we put our big trust in him.”
