A defeat to Peterborough United comes as a blow to Charlton Athletic promotion hopes.

Charlton Athletic were beaten 3-0 by Peterborough United on their travels this weekend, a first league defeat in seven coming as somewhat of a shock to the system for Nathan Jones and hit men.

The Addicks had been shooting up the table thanks to an incredible run of form that had seen the side lose just one match in 13 League One fixtures. Charlton Athletic were suddenly pushing for automatic promotion rather than just the play-off spaces but will now look to bounce back from a heavy loss to Posh.

The win over the in form London outfit made it eight games unbeaten in all competitions for Peterborough United. The side last lost a match when playing the Addicks at the Valley in the middle of February.

Reacting to the match, Jones said: “We gave up too many big chances, we normally don’t do that and when you have 25 shots and only four on target, that’s not a good return.

Nathan Jones bemoans lack of Charlton Athletic ‘quality’

“First half we handled it really well until 35 minutes and we were really dominant. They had sporadic moments but we had all the territory and we didn’t score or create enough clear-cut chances to take the lead, we didn’t show that clinical edge.

“Second half we come out and we want to be aggressive. We had three shots in the first five minutes but I’m not sure they have found the ball yet. We didn’t show enough quality, we were lashing at things and then they showed that quality in the final third and that’s why they won the game.”

Charlton Athletic now sit fourth in the table, eight points off second-placed Wrexham. The Welsh side beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to strengthen their position in the automatic promotion positions.

Jones’ side do hold a six point gap over seventh placed Bolton Wanderers, who sit just outside the play-off zone as it stands but it is still all to play for with eight matches left for the Addicks. Charlton Athletic next face Huddersfield Town at The Valley before a midweek trip to Mansfield Town.
