Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient get new play-off verdict in predicted League One table

Leyton Orient saw three points against Charlton Athletic slip from their hands in dramatic fashion on Saturday.

Charlton Athletic gave their promotion hopes a huge boost on Saturday afternoon with a dramatic late 2-1 win over London rivals Leyton Orient in one of the season’s most thrilling League One encounters.

Both the Addicks and the O’s are vying for a play-off spot this season and the clash at the Gaughan Group Stadium this weekend was a six-pointer. The hosts looked to have bagged three points thanks to a second half Jordan Brown goal as the match entered injury time.

However, a 92nd minute Macaulay Gillesphey goal was followed by a 97th minute winner by Kayne Ramsay to complete a dramatic comeback. Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones celebrated passionately with supporters afterwards.

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones apologises for ‘emotional’ celebrations

He said: “It was an outpouring of emotion at the end. I got abused constantly by the Orient supporters throughout the 90 minutes and as managers you have to put up with that. There was emotion and that’s why we do the job. Orient are a good football team and if I offended anyone then I apologise.

“I thought we started both halves poorly and it took a great strike from them to get past us but after that I thought we were good value for the win. We created lots of chances and didn’t quite take them but we went all the way to the whistle.

“Coming here a getting a point would have been a good result but we’re not happy with that as a squad and that’s our mentality. We have a squad of game changers and quality, experience and real pedigree.”

Predicted League One table

That win lifted Charlton Athletic to six in League One and into the play-offs. It’s a tightly packed table with just three points separating sixth and ninth. Leyton Orient are eighth, behind Bolton Wanderers and ahead of Reading.

Birmingham City look to be runaway league winners, 12 points clear at the top and with a game in hand on second placed Wycombe Wanderers. The Chairboys have Wrexham hot on their heels for the second automatic promotion spot.

Speaking after defeat to Charlton Athletic, O’s boss Richie Wellens said: “We have to pick ourselves up because it’s three defeats on the spin.

“We didn’t start well. We were poor and went too long. More or less all game, their chances came from us. The two goals they got came from them being on the edge of our box and our game management was really poor.

“The second goal was a blatant foul on our goalkeeper after Matt Godden barged into him but you’re dealing with people that aren’t capable of refereeing League One games.

“We’ve been giving the ball away in silly areas. We’ve been here before and we need to iron out these mistakes and look forward to the next few games.”
