Southampton are reportedly in discussions to sign Brentford-linked Morten Hjulmand from Lecce. The Saints are keen to lure him over to England as they look to stay up this season under Nathan Jones.

According to Sky Sports (live transfer blog, 18.01.23, 15.49), they are in ‘talks’ with the former Denmark youth international over a potential switch to Hampshire. They are believed to have had at least one offer knocked back already as they seek to strike a deal.

Brentford were credited with an interest in the midfielder in a report by Italian news outlet CalcioMercato. The Bees weren’t the only club mentioned either, with Borussia Dortmund and Roma said to be in the frame.

Hjulmand, 23, moved to Italy in 2021 to join Lecce and has since been a key player there. Prior to his move, he started out at FC Copenhagen before having a two-year permanent spell at Admira Wacker in Austria.

Thomas Frank’s side is well stocked up with options in the middle of the park and although Hjulmand would have provided decent competition and back-up, he wouldn’t be guaranteed a start. A possible switch to Southampton could help him get his foot in the door in the Premier League and get more game time.

Elsewhere, Brentford goalkeeper David Raya is said to be wanted by some new clubs. Chelsea and Manchester United have joined Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of him, as per The Telegraph, with his contract up in 2024.
