Gabriel Martinelli and Jurrien Timber missed good chances for Arsenal in the first half against Newcastle United.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright was on hand to give Gunners winger Gabriel Martinelli shooting tips at half time in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Magpies went in at the break 1-0 up thanks to a poacher’s goal from the in-form Alexander Isak, leaving Mikel Arteta’s with a small mountain to climb in the second half. Eddie Howe’s men are unbeaten in their last six, winning all of those game with an aggregate score of 18-2.

A defeat tonight won’t send Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup with a second leg to play at St James’ Park at the start of February but Arteta will hope his side go into that match without having to overturn a deficit.

The hosts had their chances to take the lead against Newcastle United in North London. One moment felt to Gabriel Martinelli, who is playing on the left wing this evening. The Brazilian found himself sprinting through the middle of the Magpies defence on the break and bearing down on the opposition’s goal.

Martinelli miss analysed by Arsenal legend

The winger did all the hard work to carve an opportunity, but could add the finish to put Arsenal ahead. Speaking at half time, Wright said on ITV: “You can’t say he went the wrong side. Unfortunately for him, he hit the post.

“Ideally in that situation, going in on the goalkeeper, I thought his touches were fantastic. I thought his run was fantastic, the ball was great. He should blast it hard down the goalkeeper’s right, he’s not going to get down quick enough. You want to hit that has hard as you can, down to the goalkeeper’s right across him.”

Martinelli wasn’t the only one to miss a golden chance with full-back Jurrien Timber finding one Declan Rice corner landing plum on his head but the defender was unable to convert, holding his head in his hands after the missed opportunity. Wright said: “He’s very unlucky. He got under it, he was too early.”

Les Ferdinand added: “From the school of heading, you should never let the ball go over your head. He arrives and then he stops, that’s what takes it over his head. He should have waited and waited then attacked it.”
