Arsenal have opened up a healthy gap at the top of the league table following results on Super Sunday and there can be no question now that the Gunners are legitimate title contenders this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have now won nine of their opening ten matches after beating Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road while Liverpool’s win over Manchester City at Anfield means there are now four points separating the two teams in first and second. With a real chance of winning their first Premier League title in almost two decades now on the cards, supporters will be expecting significant investment in the first team squad come the January transfer window to give Mikel Arteta the best possible chance. Indeed, it looks like that could be the case according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and here is what the transfer guru has said about the club’s plans for the next window:

In his column for CaughtOffisde, Romano said: “Arsenal have always been optimistic for this season, but not expecting to be top of the league and four points clear in October. They will keep going step by step, game by game with the aim to improve the whole project with new contracts, new players in the future and more. They will be ready in case there will be good opportunities; midfielder and winger were two possibilities considered in the summer and still in the potential plans, but it depends on the players.

“I think Arsenal need at least one more midfielder to help Arteta’s rotation, I’d have loved to see Youri Tielemans there. Tielemans certainly looks like he could be a good fit for Arsenal after his fine performances for Leicester down the years, and his contract situation likely means he’ll be a realistic and affordable target this winter, though they may also decide to wait until the summer to sign him on a free.”

Tielemans was one of several players linked with Arsenal over the summer and remains a real possibility for the club, as Romano alluded to surrounding his contract situation. However, the Gunners may face a lot of competition from Premier League rivals and further afield for the Belgian if they did decide to make a move. Manchester United and Newcastle United were just two of the multiple other clubs who had strong links to the Leicester City star earlier this year.
