Arsenal, Tottenham and Man Utd all better off in new-look infuriating Premier League table without VAR

Both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur dropped points at the weekend, but would have fared better if VAR had not existed.

Arsenal had the ball in the back of the net twice against Chelsea on Sunday evening but still came out of the clash at Stamford Bridge with just a point in a 1-1 draw that was yet another blow to the Gunners' title hopes.

Kai Havertz thought he had opened the scoring against his former club when latching onto a quickly-taken Declan Rice free kick. Chelsea players set about protesting that the player was offside and that the set play was taken too quickly.

The latter argument won't have stood with officials but VAR did its job to chalk off the goal with Havertz just in an offside position. Should that goal have stood, it would have helped Arsenal to a win should Gabriel Martinelli and Moises Caicedo both have on to have scored as they did.

VAR was also at work in the match involving Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town. Ange Postecoglou's side lost that fixture 2-1 but saw a Dominic Solanke goal overturned by VAR due to a handball.

The summer signing had the ball in the net to reduce the deficit to 2-1 shortly after half time and, should the goal have stood, Rodrigo Bentancur's strike in the 69th minute would have been a leveller rather than a consolation goal.

LondonWorld looks at how this weekend's VAR decisions would affect the Premier League table without VAR as produced by Squawka last week.

20th - Southampton, 5 points (+1)

VAR had a role to play as the Saints threw away a 2-0 lead against Leicester City. One of the Foxes' three goals came after VAR deemed that Ryan Fraser had pulled Jamie Vardy back, the veteran striker scoring from the spot kick

19th - Wolves, 7 points (+1)

Wolves would have claimed a point at Manchester City if VAR had not intervened and ruled that John Stones' 95th minute winner should stand.

18th - Leicester City, 7 points (-3)

Struggling Leicester City would be even worse off without VAR this season.

17th - Ipswich Town, 8 points

16th - Crystal Palace, 9 points (+2)

The Eagles have not be friends of VAR this season with the system costing them two points.

15th - Everton, 10 points

14th - West Ham, 10 points (-2)

Benefited from that late penalty against Manchester United, which Jarrod Bowen converted, to pick up an extra two points thanks to VAR.

13th - Manchester United, 16 points (+1)

The Red Devils would have likely picked up at least an extra point with a draw against Brighton should a Joshua Zirkzee goal have stood. Instead, it was ruled out for offside.

12th - Newcastle United, 16 points (-2)

The Magpies earned a draw at Bournemouth but only after VAR intervened to rule out a late winner for the home side. Everton also had a goal ruled out by VAR ahead of the last international break.

11th - Brentford, 16 points

10th - Tottenham Hotspur, 17 points (+1)

Would have picked up a point against Ipswich Town last weekend if Dominic Solanke's goal had stood.

9th - AFC Bournemouth, 17 points (+2)

It's been an impressive campaign from the Cherries, who would have even more points if VAR wasn't in place.

8th - Fulham, 18 points

7th - Aston Villa, 18 points

6th - Chelsea, 18 points (-1)

The Blues picked up an extra point thanks to VAR spotting that Kai Havertz was offside for Arsenal.

5th - Brighton, 19 points

4th - Nottingham Forest, 19 points

3rd - Arsenal, 21 points (+2)

The Gunners would have an extra two points if Kai Havertz's opener against Chelsea had stood.

2nd - Manchester City, 21 points (-2)

The Champions would be two points worse off without VAR as the system helped award the John Stones winner against Ipswich Town.

1st - Liverpool, 26 points (-2)

The league leaders would be two points worse off without VAR this season but would still be top of the table.
