Midfielder latest
Arsenal are facing an ‘obstacle’ in their pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino and his current club have made a last-gasp attempt to keep hold of him for longer. According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa (via The Mirror), the La Liga side are sparing ‘no expense’ as they look to persaude him to remain in San Sebastian.
Merino, who is 28-years-old, has recently helped Spain win Euro 2024 in Germany. They beat England in the final of the tournament in Berlin.
The 28-years-old has been on the books at Real Socidad since 2018. He has been a key player for them over recent years and has made 242 appearances in all competitions to date, chipping in with 27 goals, eight of which came last term.
He rose up through the academy ranks at Osasuna and broke into their first-team as a youngster. He then had spells at Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle United before making the switch to Real Sociedad six years ago.
Former player update
Former Arsenal player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be on his way back to England from Besiktas. According to The Sun, he is wanted by Sheffield United in the Championship.
The 30-year-old has emerged on the Blades’ radar following their relegation from the top flight. They won their opening game clash against Preston North End 2-0 on Friday as they look to go up immediately under Chris Wilder.
Oxlade-Chamberlain played for the Gunners from 2011 to 2017 and went on to play 198 games for the London outfit in all competitions, firing 20 goals. Prior to his move to the Emirates Stadium, he rose up through the academy ranks at Southampton and broke into their first-team as a youngster.
The ex-England international was sold to Liverpool and six years at Anfield under their former manager Jurgen Klopp. He then left Merseyside for Turkey last summer.
He has featured on 30 occasions for Besiktas since switching to the Super Lig but his future in Istanbul is now up in the air amid links to Sheffield United. They could give the chance to move back home and get regular football in the Football League.
