TfL New Year’s weekend travel: Underground, Overground and DLR closures

Transport for London (TfL) has warned of planned work, closures and service changes that may affect your journey this weekend.
On New Year’s Eve there will be road closures in central London from early afternoon, with buses on diversion to support the London New Year’s Eve fireworks event. Stations near to the fireworks event or in other busy areas of London may become exit or interchange only at short notice.

Hide AdWhile TfL travel will not be free on New Year’s Eve most services including the Tube, London Overground and DLR will run all night.

London Underground
Jubilee line
Canada Water station temporary closures
In connection with planned work on the London Overground platforms, TfL expects Canada Water station to temporarily close at the following times:
Friday December 29, at approximately 6.40am to 7.10am, 12.40pm to 1.10pm and 7.40pm to 8.10pm.

Hide AdThis will result in the Jubilee line not stopping at Canada Water during these times.
When the station is closed, to travel to Canada Water, TfL advises to take the Jubilee line to Bermondsey and change there for bus routes 47 or 188. Customers starting their journey at Canada Water should take bus routes 47 or 188 to Bermondsey to connect with the Jubilee line.
Waterloo & City line
Saturday December 30 until Monday January 1
No service on the entire line
London Overground
Friday 29 December
No service between Highbury & Islington and New Cross/New Cross Gate
Use Tube, alternative London Overground or DLR services or local bus routes. Replacement bus services will also run every 15 minutes.
Monday January 1

Use local bus route EL1. This is due to Network Rail works.
Monday January 1 until Thursday January 4
No service between Highbury & Islington and New Cross/New Cross Gate after 9.15pm each night.
Use Tube, alternative London Overground or DLR services or local bus routes. Rail replacement buses will also run.
Tuesday January 2 until Thursday January 4
No service between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction after 9.15pm each night

No service between Bank/Tower Gateway and Canary Wharf/Poplar

There will be some service level changes over the Christmas and New Year period. Check before you travel.

Buses and roads
Bus journeys will be affected by the following changes during the festive period. Some buses may be delayed, diverted or stop short of their normal destination.
Congestion Charge
The central London Congestion Charge will not operate until Monday 1 January (inclusive).

Hide AdIt will be back in operation from Tuesday 2 January 2024, 7am to 6pm on Monday to Friday and 12pm to 6pm on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.
Until Sunday December 31
The O2, North Greenwich
Multiple performances of Disney on Ice will be taking place at the O2 between 9.30am and 9pm each day. Large crowds and increased traffic are expected.
Saturday December 30
Twickenham Stadium
Harlequins Big Game will be taking place in Twickenham Stadium from 1pm until 8.30pm. Kick-off is at 2.30pm and 5.30pm. Large crowds and delays are expected at the beginning and end of the event.
Sunday December 31
Central London area
Extensive road closures will be in place in the central London area in preparation for the New Year's Eve fireworks event. Some closures will be continuous for the New Year’s Day fireworks event and Parade. Traffic delays and large crowds are expected.
Monday January 1
Westminster area

Hide AdThe route for the New Year’s Day Parade will start from Piccadilly and end in Whitehall. Road closures will be in place. Traffic delays and large crowds are expected.
Until mid-February 2024
A4, Great West Road
Until mid-February 2024, lane restrictions will be in place on the A4 Great West Road between the junction with Ealing Road and the junction with Clayponds Avenue. This is due to National Highways work on the M4 Chiswick Flyover.
