PETA Tube campaign: Animal rights charity run ‘End Speciesism’ adverts on London Underground

Animal rights charity PETA has plastered Tube carriages with posters encouraging veganism to mark its campaign to end speciesism.

The organisation, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), is running adverts on Tube and train lines across the city to mark World Speciesism Day on Saturday, August 27.

Images of animals including mice, chickens and gorillas will look down on commuters on the Bakerloo Line, Central Line, District Line, Jubilee Line, Hammersmith & Circle Line, Metropolitan Line, Northern Line, Piccadilly Line, Elizabeth Line, and Victoria Line.

While the adverts will also feature on Croydon Tramlink, Docklands Light Railway, and London Overground services.

The 600 adverts will also show the message: “We, too, feel pain, love, joy, and fear.”

It is part of PETA’s efforts to end speciesism - which it says is the “belief that, despite their extraordinary talents and abilities, all other animal species are inferior to humans.

PETA vice-president Elisa Allen said: “Other animals feel every one of the emotions humans do, and yet they’re caged, tortured, and killed with impunity.

“PETA is calling on everyone to end this cycle of suffering and stand up for animals by going vegan.”

Speciesism, PETA says, is used to justify confining primates to lab cages; killing chickens, cows and pigs for food; mutilating sheep for wool; and whipping tigers into performing tricks.

The organisation says it encourages everyone to combat this “systematic oppression by buying cosmetics that weren’t tested on animals, choosing vegan food and fashion, staying away from animal circuses, and otherwise rejecting the exploitation of animals”.

While PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way.”

A TfL spokesperson said: “This campaign is compliant with our advertising policy.”
