Deptford fire: 100 firefighters battling ‘intense’ blaze on roof of Lewisham flats

More than a hundred firefighters are tackling an “intense fire” on the roof of a block of flats in Deptford.

Twenty fire engines and around 120 firefighters rushed to Creek Road, Deptford, Lewisham just after 1pm this afternoon (Tuesday, April 26).

Around 13 people left the building before emergency services arrived, the fire service said.

Local residents are asked to close their doors and windows due to the amount of smoke from the blaze, which has been raging for more than three hours.

There have been no reports of injuries,

Josh Trebilcock shared footage of the blaze on social media, and said: “Firefighters doing an unreal job on Creek Road but the fire keeps coming.

“Looking pretty scary now. Hope everyone stays safe.”

While Deptford resident Marilyn DiCara added: “Fire on Creek Road Deptford still raging.

“The London Fire Brigade are doing a fantastic job. Heard news that all residents are safe.”

Station commander Ian Smith, who is at the scene said:  "This is an intense fire located in the roof of the building and fire crews are working hard in challenging conditions.

“We’ve increased the number of fire engines because of the need for more firefighters in breathing apparatus.

"There is a lot of smoke from the incident and we’d ask local residents to close their doors and windows."

A fire service spokesperson said: “The brigade was called at 1.03pm.

“Fire crews from Deptford and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.”
