Police say the most severely injured passenger remains in a “critical” condition while two other men, aged 34 and 22, were also taken to hospital with slash wounds.

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing GBH and Mile End tube station was closed for several hours, although it has now reopened.

A father-of-two who lives nearby and captured the aftermath on video said: “It must have been about 1am when I went downstairs to make myself a cup of tea.

“I saw these blue lights shining through the window and went out to see what had happened. It was pouring with rain at the time, so I grabbed a jumper with a hood.

“That’s when I saw there were about seven police cars and two ambulances.

“There was a bus outside Mile End station and the police were on it.

“There was no screaming or bangs or anything like that.”

He added: “I spoke to one of the paramedics who said someone had been stabbed on the bus.

“As I looked across towards the station, I saw them carrying someone out on a stretcher.

“I woke up this morning thinking, I really hope nobody has died.

“The whole of Bow Road and the station had been locked down.

“One of the underground staff said they had caught one person, but they were still looking for others who had run away. So it was a major incident.”

A member of staff at a dry cleaners outside Mile End station said: “When I arrived at 8am the police were outside my shop.

“Officers attended and found a 34-year-old man suffering from stab injuries. They immediately provided first aid.

“The man was taken by paramedics to an east London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
