ITV Unforgotten series 6: Is Whitney Marsh a real place in east London?

Whitney Marsh is named as a spot in east London in the new series of ITV’s Unforgotten, but is it actually a real place?

ITV’s crime drama Unforgotten returned to our screens over the weekend as its sixth series started with a murder investigation in an east London spot named Whitney Marsh.

The series 6 opener which aired on Sunday (February 9) saw DCI Jessica 'Jessie' James and Sunil 'Sunny' Khan back in action following reports human remains had been found in a wetlands in the east of the city.

In the episode the duo head to Whitney Marsh where a human spine has been uncovered. On scene forensics tell them they believe the victim to have died in the last 50 years or so.

But is Whitney Marsh, the spot in which the human remains were found, a real place in London? Let's take a look.

Is Whitney Marsh a real place in east London?

No. While the ITV series names Whitney Marsh as a spot in east London, a wetlands by the same name does not actually exist in the east of the city in real life.

However there are a few different wetlands in the east of the city including the Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes that could have been inspiration for the fictional spot.

Viewers of ITV’s Unforgotten may also be surprised to learn that marsh scenes were not even filmed in London. They were actually filmed in and in Wales.

In an interview with The Mirror, Sunil 'Sunny' Khan actor Sanjeev Bhaskar said filming for the Marsh scenes was “Absolutely freezing.”
