The Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race will return to the River Thames in April. Here is everything you need to know, including where to watch it in London.
  • The Boat Race, also known as The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, usually occurs in late March or early April each year.
  • The 2025 Boat Race, featuring the 79th Women's Race and the 170th Men's Race, will take place on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
  • The race happens on the River Thames in London, along a stretch known as The Championship Course. It’s a 4.25-mile (6.8 km) route running from Putney to Mortlake in southwest London.

Every spring, the River Thames comes alive with energy, tradition, and a healthy dose of rivalry as The Boat Race — the iconic rowing showdown between Oxford and Cambridge Universities — returns to London. Whether you're a rowing enthusiast or just love an excuse to soak up riverside vibes with a drink in hand, this is one of the city's most atmospheric free events.

Now in its 194th year, The Boat Race has evolved into a full-blown London institution. While the fierce competition between the two ancient universities remains at the heart of the event, it’s just as much about riverside strolls, local pubs, and soaking up springtime energy with the crowd.

Since 2015, the Women’s Boat Race has taken place on the same day and course — and it’s just as thrilling. Race times are staggered so you can watch both without missing a beat.

Here’s everything you need to know to catch the action — and turn it into the perfect London day out.

Where to watch the Boat Race in London

1. Putney Bridge (Start Line)

Kick things off where the crews do — at Putney. Expect a lively buzz near the bridge, especially outside the many nearby pubs. The Duke’s Head and The Boathouse are local favourites.

Tip: Arrive early — this area gets crowded fast.

2. Hammersmith Bridge

One of the most dramatic parts of the race, this is where tactics come into play and overtaking often happens. You’ll get a sweeping view of the river, plus plenty of bars and cafes nearby in Hammersmith and Barnes.

3. Chiswick Eyot & Dukes Meadow

A bit further along the course, this stretch offers a more relaxed crowd and lots of open space — ideal if you’re bringing a picnic or just want to escape the densest crowds.

4. Chiswick Bridge (Finish Line)

The grand finale — watch the crews make their final push here. There’s usually a celebratory vibe and a great view of the climax of the race. The Ship pub nearby is a local gem for a post-race pint.

Watch the Boat Race from a pub

From historic boozers like The Blue Anchor in Hammersmith to trendy riverside spots like The White Hart in Barnes, this is a pub-lover’s dream day out. Many venues even host special race-day events or set up outdoor bars.
