Stevie Nicks BST Hyde Park review: Icon reflected on old memories and made new ones at capital show

Following a couple cancelled shows due to minor surgery Stevie Nicks made an iconic comeback to the stage at BST Hyde Park in London.

There was a real buzz about Hyde Park on Friday (July 12) as Stevie Nicks kicked off the final weekend of BST Hyde Park.

It was as if you knew you were about to witness something legendary and boy did she treat us.

From the return of her classic assortment of capes, including the original that she wore on the cover of her 1981 album Bella Donna, to her tributes to longtime collaborator Tom Petty and former Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie as well as a surprise appearance from Mr Harry Styles himself.

As Nicks put it Hyde Park is one of her favourite places to perform, so why wouldn't she pull out all the stops.

“When people say ‘So where’s the best place to play?’ The best that you can say is, ‘Well I’ve played Hyde Park.’

Starting off with If Anyone Falls, Fleetwood Mac hits Dreams and Gypsy followed before she paid tribute to the late Tom Petty with a cover of his song Free Fallin’.

Ahead of the track, Nicks explained that her last appearance at BST Hyde Park in 2017 as part of Petty’s headline show was also the last time she saw him before his death later that year.

Returning to the same stage seven years on, she said she could “feel his presence” as she added: “I know he’s with us and I know he is happy we’re here.”

Next was a deep dive into some of Nicks’ early solo tunes with Wild Heart, Bella Donna and Stand Back, followed by the Fleetwood Mac Gold Dust Woman before the classic Edge Of Seventeen.

Returning for the encore with Rhiannon, Nicks surprised BST Hyde Park crowds with a special guest appearance from Harry Styles for the last two songs.

While there was talk that she could bring him out for her capital show, the chart topper joined Nicks on stage as they performed Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around and Landslide in tribute to her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Christine McVie who died aged 79 in 2022.

Following the performance, Styles stood in hand with Nicks as she gushed about McVie on what would have been her 81st birthday.

During the emotional moment, she said: “It’s taken me all of this time to be able to try to even deal with this situation but one thing that my mum used to say to me when I was little when I was hurt she’d go ‘Stevie when you’re hurt you always run to the stage’, and that’s what I’ve been doing ever since Chris passed away.”

As crowds began to clear after Nicks and her band took their final bows, I had to take a moment to try and absorb what just happened.

Getting to see two of my favourite artists, Stevie Nicks and Harry Styles, perform with my own eyes is something that I'll truly never forget.
