Turning 25: Special film celebrating 25 years of the London Eye commissioned

A short film celebrating the iconic south bank wheel turning 25 is in production.

To honour two and a half decades since the London Eye first landed on the River Thames’ south bank a short film has been commissioned.

Having first been put up in 1999 as the Millennium Wheel, the landmark opened to the public in March 2000 and has been spinning at the same spot ever since.

While it was initially given a five-year lease, it obtained permanent planning permission in 2003. However, this decision did not secure its future on the south bank past 2028.

In May last year, Lambeth Council finally voted to keep the wheel attraction as its planning committee voted unanimously for the structure to stay put.

Reflecting on its cultural impact on the city, the new short film Turning 25: London’s Eye will explore how the famous structure has become more than its parts as a familiar part of our skyline.

Featuring interviews with members of the architectural team who dreamed the structure up, the film will also blend archival footage and contemporary scenes to capture its legacy in the capital.

Turning 25: London’s Eye will be released to the public ahead of the official anniversary on Sunday 9th March. An official release date is yet to be confirmed.
