A hilarious Facebook post claiming the London Eye has been taken a part to be sent to Scotland went viral this week.

On Sunday (March 10), a joke post saying the capital's famous wheel had been taken down and was to be relocated to Loch Lomond was shared on the Facebook page Travel Scotland Goals Group.

Featuring images of what purported to show the dismantled structure spread out on the River Thames alongside cranes, the post added it would be known as the Loch Lomond Aye.

The fake post read: "Footage from London today as the former 'London Eye' is dismantled, ready for the long journey to the banks of Loch Lomond.

"Originally planned as a tourist attraction for Loch Lomond, it was leased to the City of London for 25 years, now expiring.

"EDIT - just had a travel update in. The Loch Lomond Aye, as it will be known, will be moved through Scotland over the Easter weekend. The 2-mile-long convoy of sections will be moving at 10 mph. Police have advised to expect some delays."

While some seemed to catch on to the joke and wondered whether April 1 had come early, others in the comments shared their concerns over the London landmark.

One user wrote: "Wow, can't believe it, was going to visit in weeks time."

Another added: "Oh dear, didn't know this. Was planning to ride on my trip to London in June. Guess that's not going to happen."

Of course, the post was just a wind-up. The London Eye is still standing on South Bank, with thousands of tourists snapping away and posting pictures across social media this week.

The photos that were featured in the Facebook post and found they were actually taken in 1999 when the 'Millennium Wheel' was first erected.

Other spoof posts on Travel Scotland Goals Group include a "new breed of lamb, made to get tartan wool directly", and a group of clowns fixing a road: "Scotland, famous for its potholes, glad to see the council's now outsourcing the fixings of them."
