Liverpool legend delivers Chelsea transfer message after Tottenham Hotspur draw

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Chelsea need ‘a goal-getter’ if they are to challenge for major honours.

The former Scotland midfielder delivered that assessment in the aftermath of the Blues 2-2 draw against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Tuchel’s side enjoyed the majority of the possession but managed fewer shots on targets than their visitors and created fewer clear-cut chances.

Goals from defensive duo Kalidou Koulibaly were cancelled out by a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg strike and a last-gasp header from England captain Harry Kane as the two sides shared the spoils after an explosive afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

The draw means Chelsea have taken four points from their opening two games of the season - but former Liverpool captain Souness insisted a striker must be their priority if they are to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Chelsea were by far the better team and they’ll go away angry with themselves only getting a point.

“Spurs have got out of jail and that was great entertainment.

“They were the best team and we asked for the stats five minutes before Harry’s equaliser.

“I think they’ve had three shots on target and scored two of them.

“They looked a really good team today, without having that cutting edge and I think we touched on it before, for me, to get back in and have a chance of winning the league and the Champions League, I think they need a goal-getter.”

There were plenty of flashpoints throughout a pulsating 90 minutes.

Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and current Blues boss Tuchel clashed on the touchline in the aftermath of Hojbjerg’s equaliser and came face-to-face again in the aftermath of the full-time whistle.

Both managers were shown a red card by referee Anthony Taylor and will now face touchline bans over the coming weeks.

But Souness believes the controversy only added to an action-packed afternoon at Stamford Bridge.

“What an advert for our league, absolutely fantastic,” he explained.

“But I have to say, the referees have been given an order of direction, to allow a bit more to go in the game - and I think it makes for such a better watch.

“There are two managers getting excited with each other, I’m sorry, it’s an entertainment business.

“Everybody watching that would have enjoyed that game of football.”
