Maxwel Cornet is still waiting for his first West Ham goal but a switch to his prefered number may bring him luck for the campaign ahead.

West Ham United forward Maxwel Cornet has been given his lucky shirt number 17 ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign after a difficult first season at the London Stadium.

The Ivory Coast star had played with the number 14 during his first season at West Ham despite the number 17 being vacant since Jarrod Bowen changed numbers in 2020.

Cornet is one of four Hammers stars to see their numbers change. Lucas Paqueta will now wear the number 10 instead of 11, with his former number going to Gianluca Scamacca. Finally, goalkeeper Alphonse Areola will sport number 23 instead of number 13.

Cornet signed for West Ham last August after enduring relegation with Burnley. The star put pen to paper on a five-year deal with West Ham paying £17.5 million for his services.

It looked an exciting move after Cornet bagged nine goals and stood out in an otherwise disappointing 2021/22 campaign for Burnley. However, the player struggled for game time in his first season under David Moyes and is still without his first Hammers goal.

Cornet will be hoping that a return to his preferred number 17 will bring him more luck in the upcoming Premier League season, which could be make-or-break for his time at West Ham.

The star previously played under that digit at his first club FC Metz and at various points throughout his six-year spell at Lyon.

When confirming the squad numbers, West Ham did warn fans against prematurely getting shirts printed before the transfer window had closed. A statement read: "The Club does not advise squad personalisation on shirts while the transfer window is still open. Items with custom printing cannot be exchanged or refunded unless the product is faulty. Furthermore, if a player changes his number at any time we cannot offer a refund or an exchange on this shirt (this does not affect your statutory rights)."
