This January is arguably one of the biggest and most important windows in West Ham’s history.

Their grip on their top four place has weakened and teams around the east London club are hitting form at the wrong time for them.

David Moyes reiterated his transfer stance at the Hammers, saying he wouldn’t make mistakes he’s made in the past, and spend responsibly and only if the opportunity presented itself.

This has resulted in so far a quiet window.

Where do West Ham need to strengthen?

The task West Ham face is simple.

They know where they need to strengthen, and have done since before the turn of the year.

The main area they need fresh blood is in centre-back, preferably a left-footed, left-sided centre half to provide adequate cover for the injured Angelo Ogbonna.

Another area is striker.

With Michail Antonio aging and picking up slightly more niggly injuries than usual, a striker is needed.

The club haven’t replaced Sebastian Haller, who they sold to Ajax in January 2021 for around £20 million.

Antonio needs a back-up or competition, and a striker takes precedence in this window.

Throughout the window, they have kept their cards fairly close to their chest, although inevitably there’s rumours.

Duja Caleta-Car

The Marseille centre back is still rather unknown, and has only come to prominence in recent years.

The 25-year-old Croatian international was part of the 2018 World Cup squad who reached the final, and has made 20 appearances for the national side.

His only football in one of European’s major leagues has been with Marseille, who signed the player after the World Cup, almost four years ago.

He has made 87 appearances for Marseille, and stands at a towering 6ft 4in, and would be a good asset, if signed.

The price is not thought the be an issue, as he would only cost around £15 million.

He came in for Liverpool last season, and made 17 appearances for Liverpool in the absence of Virgil Van Dijk and Joel Matip.

He put in man of the match performances in the Champions League, proving himself to be a reliable defender.

The striker switched allegiance from England to Chile, and went on the star at the Copa America.

Brereton-Diaz has had somewhat of a football revival.

He underwhelmed at Nottingham Forest, before going to Blackburn, and now he currently sits second in the Championship goal tally, behind Alexander Mitrovic.

At just 22, and standing at 6ft 1 but blessed with pace, Brereton-Diaz, althought commanding a high fee, would still be a shrewd investment.

If he signs, Schick will join a mini Czech contingent at the club, as he will join fellow countrymen Alex Kral, Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal.
