West Ham in 'pole position' to sign 24-goal striker in bargain transfer

West Ham are said to be leading the chase for a talented young striker.

West Ham are being backed to land one of the most coveted young British strikers. The Hammers haven’t had much luck when it comes to striker signings, and it hasn’t got any better this season, with Niclas Fullkrug struggling with injury throughout the campaign so far.

Graham Potter will be hoping new loan signing Evan Ferguson will be a more fruitful signing, especially with Michail Antonio out long-term with a serious injury.

Big-money striker signings don’t seem to be something West Ham are particularly good at, so it makes sense that the Irons may be trying to sign younger players who can be signed on the cheap and develop into, not only reliable players, but also profitable assets in the future.

One of those players may already have been identified, with Celtic youngster Daniel Cummings reportedly of interest. According to The West Ham Way, the Hammers are currently in pole position to land the youngster, who could be on his way out of Parkhead. The 18-year-old was linked with a move away from Celtic in the winter window, but the Hoops rejected offers and pushed any more back to the summer.

It has been reported that West Ham are hopeful of landing a £350,000 deal, which would be made up of compensation costs, with Cummings out of contract and available on a free transfer, barring the mandatory compensation payments which can be pre-agreed with the player’s existing club or left to the decision of a tribunal. In this case, it’s likely to be the former, with the Hoops likely to be able to maximise their earnings by negotiating upfront.

Cummings is a Scotland under-19s international who currently plays for Celtic’s B team, scoring 24 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions this season. The youngster is yet to represent the first team and could now be lured away by the Premier League, with clubs already able to agree a pre-contract with the young striker.
