West Ham make contact with 'goalscorer with intuition' over summer deal amid Inter Milan interest
West Ham are said to be interested in a proven goalscorer ahead of the summer.
West Ham are said to have contacted one of Europe’s most attractive strikers in a bid to strike a deal, but they face an uphill battle. The Hammers are in a midst of a difficult season, still yet to reach the 40-point mark in a season they entered with hopes of challenging for Europe.
The Irons decided to rip up their plans with Julen Lopetegui and start again with Graham Potter, and in doing that, they knew they would need to turn to a longer term plan, with the former Chelsea boss needing time and new signings to make his vision come to life.
It has been a slow start under Potter, but the weekend’s win over Arsenal has provided a much-needed spark, and they will be looking to build on that win when they face strugglers Leicester City at home on Thursday night. In the meantime, the Irons will already be looking to the summer and considering possible targets in a bid to get a head start on business.
As part of that, it’s reported by TalkSport that the Hammers have already contacted Lille striker Jonathan David to see if they can tempt him into signing a pre-contract agreement ahead of the summer. The American-born Canadian is out of contract at the end of this season, but he is not short of options.
The report adds that Inter Milan and FC Barcelona have also been in touch, and West Ham are said to be well aware that they are not the best option for David in terms of glamour, with the other clubs able to offer Champions League football.
The interest in David is no surprise, with the 25-year-old having scored 83 goals in 157 league appearances for Lille, also scoring 31 in 59 for Canada. Former USMNT star Charlie Davies has told Essentially Sport of David previously: “He’s a goalscorer. He’s exact, and he’s got the perfect profile. He’s not the fastest, but in terms of intuition in the box, you need somebody who’s gonna pop up in the right spot and finish when they get the opportunity and finish in a variety of different ways.”
