Jordan Pickford and David Moyes agree on what West Ham are already doing 'better' under Nuno Espirito Santo

West Ham picked up a big away point against Everton on Monday night.

West Ham picked up a big point away from home on Monday night when they drew with Everton away from home. The Hammers announced Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival after the sacking of Graham Potter, and the new Iron boss saw his men rally back from behind.

Jarrod Bowen salvaged a point, and every point is important after the start that West Ham have had. It’s no mean feat, either, with Everton having been very solid so far this season, especially in their new home.

Speaking after the game, Everton keeper Jordan Pickford dissected the game, and he pointed out that West Ham counter-attacked well in the second half. He said: “I think we started both halves well but when you're 1-0 up, you've got to go and get that second goal and put pressure on them. They probably counter-attacked us better in the second half – something their new manager does well as he proved at Nottingham Forest last season.

"We controlled most of the game but we just couldn't get that second goal. We kept penetrating, we just lacked a clear-cut chance that would have allowed us to grab the win. I don't think we got that. We had a lot of the ball and they sat off but it was just that clear chance we were missing.

"We defended well, we stayed quite solid and I'm disappointed we didn't get the clean sheet. We wanted to win. After we conceded we didn't crumble, we kept going, kept getting on the ball and trying to find a way to score but it's one of those – we're disappointed not to get three points and that's the standard we set ourselves now. That's what we're striving for – three points every time we go out on the pitch."

Moyes agrees with Pickford

Everton boss and former West Ham manager David Moyes agreed with his goalkeeper that the Iron counter-attacked well. He added: “ thought the performance at times was good,” said Moyes, speaking after the game. “We did a lot of good things. We gave up too many transitions – mainly in the second half. I’m disappointed we didn’t get the second goal, but we probably didn’t create anything really clear cut.

“I take lots of positives from the game. The one thing we mustn’t forget is what a good team West Ham have got. They’ve got Brazilian internationals, they’ve got England internationals. They’ve got a really good team, so it certainly wasn’t going to be a game where we could come and roll them over. Far from it.

“But I thought for long periods, we looked like we could get the second goal, especially at the start of the second half. But I think they grew in confidence. They started to get one or two counter-attacks and in the end, it cost us.”
