West Ham looked capable of getting something out of the London derby at half time but fell apart after the break.

A crazy 18 minutes of football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw West Ham throw away a strong first half performance in a defensive capitulation against their London rivals.

The two sides went in at 1-1 at half time but by 60 minutes the hosts found themselves 4-1 up through a flurry of goals. Yves Bissouma put Ange Postecoglou’s side ahead before two more goals that came about as a result of lacklustre Hammers’ defensive work.

Summer signing Jean-Clair Todibo and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola saw communication fail after a good Tottenham Hotspur move, the ball hitting the back of Areola’s net following an own goal for the shot-stopper. Son Heung-min then bagged a goal five minutes later on his return to the side, but didn’t have to work too hard with an ocean of space gifted to him at the right of the West Ham defence.

Scotland football legend Ally McCoist was left bewildered in the commentary box as he worked for TNT Sports at Saturday lunchtime. Reacting to the own goal, which had initially been attributed to Todibo, he said: “If there was going to be a goal at the end of the move, it deserved a better goal than it got. An excellent ball again from Son with the outside of his right foot, takes a touch there, beautiful. He continues his run and gives Kulusevski the option. It's a catalogue of disasters. It really is. Disaster for West Ham.”

McCoist then didn’t hold back from criticising Hammers summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who had enjoyed moments of promise against Spurs. After the fourth went in, McCoist said: “It's a great finish. But dear me, where is Wan-Bissaka? Where is your right full back? I know he's up the pitch looking for an overlap but he leaves Todibo in a position there which Son just wants to exploit. He wants to take him one one vs one, stepover, gets his half yard, keeps it down low and hard and it goes in. I understand that West Ham are chasing a little bit but Wan-Bissaka's positioning there for me is poor.”
