West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus will serve a ban following a red card against Tottenham Hotspur.

Scottish football legend Ally McCoist was branded a 'dinosaur' online after he launched an extraordinary defence of West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus following the player's red card against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

The Ghana international had opened the scoring after just 18 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and put in an impressive first half display in the London derby. However, as Ange Posecoglou's side romped to a 4-1 lead after the break, the 24-year-old lost his cool.

Kudus appeared to kick out at Spurs defender Micky van de Ven and went on to push several opposition players despite the best attempts of his Hammers' teammates to calm him down. Referee Andy Madley first showed Kudus a yellow card but, inevitably, was sent to the monitor by VAR and soon changed that decision to a red card.

Covering the game on TNT Sports, former Rangers star McCoist made no secret of his disgust at the decision, even as commentator Darren Fletcher tried to reason with the pundit's rant.

Ally McCoist rant in full

McCoist said: "The first thing I would say is, van de Ven has got up very, very quickly. That makes me think he shouldn't have been down.

"He's gonna get sent off for that. I don't think there's an awful lot. He puts his hand to his face, I hope it's a yellow for Kudus. I'll be delighted if he stays on the field. There's a hand to the face, it's not a punch, it's a push away. It could be a red card, yes it could.

"I'm pleased about that [Kudus initially receiving a yellow card]. You've gone all soft on me! At least Sarr doesn't go down, to be fair to him. He's gonna get sent off for it.

"Do you know something, by the letter of the law he's right but, you know what, book him and let's get on with the game. I agree with you, by the letter of the law he is going to send him off. He is.

"Is this where we want to go? Is this the road we want to go down? I'll be honest, I know you're looking at me, I'm probably old school, let's give him a booking and get on with the game.

"I do not have a problem at all with the use of VAR there. Of course, he has [got himself to blame]. Completely ill-disciplined."

‘Worst thing I’ve heard in years’ - social media reacts

Reacting to the extraordinary rant online, McCoist came under fire from football fans for his defence of Kudus' aggression. One social media user wrote on X: "Ally McCoist talking some of the biggest nonsense I've ever heard too."

Another added: "Ally McCoist asking 'is this the road we want to go down?' as Kudus kicks a man twice, and then hits two people in the face. Yes it's the road we want to go down, because I don't want people getting hit in the face. You dinosaur."

Meanwhile, another social media user branded it 'the worst thing I've heard in years'.
