Tottenham Hotspur could move a step closer to adding to their defensive ranks over the coming days as one reported target is about to make a decision on his future.

Spanish outlets Mundo Deportivo and Sport have both revealed Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet is ready to make the next move in his career and will announce some ‘important news’ this week.

The France international has reportedly been told he is not part of Xavi’s plans at the Camp Nou and will be allowed to leave the Catalan giants during the summer transfer report.

The report suggests Ligue 1 club Marseille have made an offer to take the defender back to France on a one-year loan, with Spurs offering to double the duration of that deal.

Lenglet’s salary at Barca is said to be ‘deemed high’ by both Marseille and Spurs, who have both offered to pay a proportion of his wages during their duration of their respective deals.

Lenglet joined Barcelona from La Liga rivals Sevilla in a £32.3million deal in July 2018 and helped the club to the La Liga title during his first 12 months in Catalonia.

A Copa del Rey final win over Athletic Bilbao followed in 2021 but his playing time has reduced as club legend Xavi continues to put his print on the Barcelona squad.

The 27-year-old centre-back made just seven starts in all competitions last season and has slipped out of contention for the France squad during that time.

Lenglet has 15 senior caps to his name but has not been named in a Les Bleus squad since he came on as a substitute in an 8-0 home win against Kazakhstan last November.

A move away from Barcelona seems essential if he is to force his way into the thinking of France manager Didier Deschamps with the World Cup Finals in Qatar now just months away.
