Tottenham to 'compete' with Arsenal for transfer of 7-goal Serie A hitman

Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign a highly-rated striker from the Serie A in the January transfer window.

With the January transfer window still open, there is plenty of time for teams in the Premier League to make a season-defining signing. Tottenham Hotspur are looking to do just this, as they begin to target Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee.

They aren't the only club who are interested in the former Bayern Munich starlet. Their bitterest of rivals, Arsenal, are also believed to be in the race, according to a recent report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

While it is unlikely that Spurs will make a move for the 22-year-old in January, there is a real possibility that they could snap him up over the course of the summer transfer window.

So far this season, Zirkzee has scored 8 goals and has notched up four assists in 22 games across all competitions. 7 of these goals have come in the league - he has been a mainstay in Bologna's starting XI.

Do Tottenham need to sign a striker in January?

Currently, Spurs do not have an out-and-out striker in their squad. Instead, they have been playing Heung-min Son and Richarlison in that position - both of whom are generally more comfortable when functioning as left-wingers.

Despite this, Tottenham have had no problem with finding the back of the net this season. In the current Premier League campaign, they have scored on 44 occasions - only two teams have scored more goals than the Lilywhites so far (Liverpool with 48 and Manchester City with 47).

Nevertheless, the loss of Harry Kane when he joined Bayern Munich in the summer has undoubtedly left a hole in the squad. Bringing a new forward to the club - especially one of Zirkzee's calibre - would be a fantastic way to fill this gap. Not only is he an accomplished goalscorer, his adroit technical ability makes him a strong creative influence up top.
