Brighton and Hove Albion are set to pip Tottenham to the signing of Barcelona star Ansu Fati despite he looking like heading to north London on Wednesday.

Spurs had been locked in talks with Barcelona for the signing of the youngster as they look to give manager Ange Postecoglou options in attack following the exit of Harry Kane and Richarlison’s slow start to the league season.

Spurs have also been strongly linked with Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson but have not been able to strike a deal with less than 48 hours to transfer deadline day.

Spurs boss Postecoglou admitted he was hoping for new signings even though they had to get some players out before bringing in more.

The former Celtics manager said: “Well, I think my view around that hasn’t really changed. We need to trim the squad and get it to a more manageable state.

“Then see what is available for us to then bring in players to strengthen the squad in a couple of areas that we may need.”

Tottenham know they have to react to losing Ansu Fati with sources saying the Spain international chose to join Brighton due to manager Roberto De Zerbi and the playing style that he’s implemented since taking up the Brighton job.

Another Tottenham transfer likely to happen before the window shuts is that of defender Eric Dier who has been offered to Bayern Munich in the last week.

The England international has fallen out of favour and a move away will be in the interest of both club and player.
