Spurs and Newcastle United reportedly made unsuccessful offers to sign Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic in January.

The Premier League rivals were both in the market for a midfielder during the winter transfer window and were believed to have a strong interest in the Croatian international.

Brozovic looked set to leave the San Siro when his contract expired at the end of the season and that led to serious interest from Spurs, Newcastle and Barcelona.

They were far from the only party showing interest with Manchester United, PSG and Liverpool all said to be monitoring his situation at Inter.

However, Brozovic ended all speculation over his future when he agreed a new four-year deal keeping him at the Serie A giants until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Reporter Fabrizio Biasin spoke of Spurs interest in Brozovic when he was asked about possible moves for Inter team-mates Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni.

Speaking to Telelombardia, he said: “I don’t know, but I can say that they tried for Brozovic.

“Tottenham made an attempt, but Brozovic, a man of his word, said he wanted to stay and he did it by signing the renewal.

“He had Newcastle, Barcelona and Tottenham, and he stayed. Barcelona had offered him €8m per season.”

Antonio Conte was successful in strengthening his midfield options earlier this season when he raided Serie A for Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Italian will also have highly-rated youngster Pape Sarr as part of his squad next season when the 19-year-old midfielder returns from a loan spell at FC Metz.

The Senegal international joined Spurs from Metz in a £15.2m deal last August before returning to the Ligue 1 club on a season-long loan deal.
