Tottenham plan Mathys Tel transfer trick with Man Utd raid on the table

All the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding Tottenham as they prepare to face Liverpool.

Tottenham are now preparing for a Premier League date with Liverpool this weekend, although they will already have eyes on next Thursday night’s Europa League semi-final first leg with Bodo/Glimt. Ange Postecoglou likely needs to win the Europa League to have any chance of keeping his job, with Champions League qualification available to the competition’s victor.

Still, Premier League momentum will only have a positive impact on European hopes, although it will be a tough task against a Liverpool side that can win the Premier League title this weekend. As Spurs look to plan an upset, we have rounded up all the latest news and transfer rumours surrounding the North London side.

Tel latest

Tottenham are said to be planning to reduce the option to buy they currently hold in the Mathys Tel loan deal. Spurs have the option to make the loan deal permanent for 50million euros (£42.7m), but they are said to be keen on reducing that fee before pulling the trigger, well aware that Bayern Munich prefer to sell the winger this summer.

German publication Kicker say Spurs do want to keep Tel, but they won’t pay that number for him, hoping to use Bayern’s hope to sell the youngster against them. Tel has made eight league appearances for Spurs so far, scoring twice, and he has hit some improved form over recent games. At the time of signing Tel, Postecoglou said: “I didn’t actually bring him here just for six months. I think he’s very, very exciting. When you meet him, you realise that he has that certain something. He has enormous confidence in what he wants to do.

“Although he is still young, he can physically handle the Premier League. He’s a goal scorer, he can hold his own, he’s got the necessary speed. He will play an important role in our end-of-season push and beyond.“

Rashford claim

Tottenham are being linked with a move for a Manchester United wantaway ahead of the summer, with FootballTransfers claiming they hold an interest in Marcus Rashford. Rashford’s time at Old Trafford seems to be over, and he is currently on loan with Aston Villa, who have a £40million option to buy.

The report claims Tottenham could muscle in if Villa don’t make a permanent move, and the report comes after the North London club reportedly passed up the chance to sign the England international back in January. Spurs will likely want to spend less than £40million if they do want to sign Rashford, and it’s true that United may well have to settle for a figure below that if they want the forward’s wages off their books ahead of next season.

Neville backs Spurs thrashing

Gary Neville has backed Liverpool to sweep Tottenham without too much fuss this weekend as they look to wrap up the title.

The Sky Sports pundit said on The Overlap: “A procession. It will be barbaric. I think it will be 4-1. Liverpool will score four. It will be one of those celebratory [afternoons].” Speaking about Liverpool over the weekend, Neville said: “I think, at the start of the season, I had [Liverpool] in fifth. I thought their would be just a natural fall off as there sometimes is when a Wenger leaves, or a Sir Alex Ferguson leaves. There is just a natural drop. That’s why I think the manager and coaches deserve enormous credit.”
