'Not Good Enough': Ex Tottenham star faces sack in first managerial job after Charlton Athletic defeat
Charlton Athletic beat West Brom on Tuesday night, leaving the ex Spurs player and coach defeated.
Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Ryan Mason is under significant pressure in his first managerial role at West Brom, just five months after taking the post at the Hawthorns.

West Brom were beaten 1-0 by Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Tuesday night, the London outfit pinching three points in the 95th minute through summer signing Sonny Carey. West Brom now sit 14th in the Championship after 14 matches.
Mason’s side are winless in their last four, with three defeats among those results. It’s not been a start to the season required for a club chasing promotion back to the Premier League.
Ex Tottenham Hotspur star under pressure in first managerial job
The 34-year-old, who made 70 appearances for Spurs before ending his playing career early after a serious head injury, began working as a coach with Spurs in 2018. Mason stepped in twice as interim head coach at Tottenham Hotspur and had been working under Ange Postecoglou until the Aussie’s dismissal this summer.
Mason was linked with several Championship jobs but opted for West Brom. However, the pressure is mounting on his shoulders with Mason admitting that he was at fault for the side’s performances recently in a defeated post-match interview.
He said: “It’s another loss and it’s not good enough. Ultimately, the responsibility is on me. At the moment, I’m not doing enough to get enough from the players.
“I feel like the players put the effort in today. We were there, we were in the game. We had opportunities in both halves that we needed to make count and we didn’t. To concede how we did at the end is a reflection on me and what I’m trying to create here, and at the moment, it’s certainly not good enough.”

He added: “I don’t think anyone wants to hear about positives, the reality is it’s about winning games of football and we aren’t doing that. The responsibility is with me.”
Charlton Athletic climbed to fifth in the Championship table with that win over West Brom as an impressive start to the season following promotion from League One continues.
Speaking this summer as he arrived at West Brom, Mason shared praise for Postecoglou and the last couple of years he spent at Tottenham Hotspur. He said: “It was incredible for me to be a part of his team. I learned a hell of a lot, not just from a football side, but from a human side as well, which is important. We’ve got a bond that will never be broken because we won together and we created history together.”
