'At least until January' - Tottenham expected to keep key player for now amid exit talk

Tottenham fans will be dreading one particular goodbye that may be looming.

Tottenham fans will already be sensing a tearful goodbye for Heung-min Son in the not too distant future as the South Korean favourite enters the last year of his contract at age 33.

Son penned a new one-year extension towards the end of last season to remain at the club for another yea, and it’s going to be interesting to see what happens as his contract begins to reach its end. Like many at Spurs, the club legend struggled for form last season, but there is hope he can rediscover his attacking production under new boss Thomas Frank.

As for what his future holds, National World’s James Trembath believes a January exit could be the most likely scenario for the Tottenham legend. He said on the latest Spurs podcast: “Heung-Min Son is a legend, An absolute legend of the club. And actually, on the day, eventually, when it does come and he does depart Spurs, I think that's going to be more upsetting to a lot of Spurs fans than when Harry Kane left. And I think that tells you everything, obviously. Harry Kane, record goal scorer, absolute icon at the club.

“But, you know, Son, he's stuck with us. He came in for an absolute bargain when you look at it. Back in the day there, over 10 years ago. £22 million, I think it was at the time, and he's just been an absolute goal machine, an assist machine. His model professionalism, he's just exemplary, isn't he, on and off the pitch. He is Idolised by all the fans.

“We know he struggled last season. He had a lot of difficulties and he wasn't fit. I’m not sure the system particularly suited him in the end that Ange was playing. And if anybody has the right to decide what comes next, it's absolutely heung-min Son.

“I think all fans would agree he deserves to be sort of the gatekeeper of his own destiny, really. That said, I think it's interesting, actually, that he's still here. We've obviously got the upcoming tour to Korea, where he'll obviously get a lot of love from the Spurs fans. I dare say there'll be some marketing, contractual arrangements within that as well.

“But I suspect, and this is just a personal opinion now, and that actually Son may well stay on, at least until January. I have a feeling he fancies one more crack at the Champions League. He wants to see what Thomas Frank has in store for him, and then come January, it may well be he's got six months left on his contract at that period.”

Speculating on where Son might go, Trembath added: “It may be then he heads off to the likes of MLS or Saudi Arabia. We'll obviously know where we are in terms of the Champions League, but there'll be just one group game left after Christmas. So, come January, we'll know where we are with Spurs, and he will, and that may well be the time that he then says his farewells.

“But I can see him giving us another six months and just reviewing it after that. I think that'd be a good move. He could help the transition from the new manager and help bed in some of the younger players in the squad, and then he can look to decide what he's going to do in the future.

“But I don't see him signing another contract at Spurs. I mean, he turned 33 this week, so, he's certainly coming towards the twilight years. But, you know, the way Thomas Frank sets up may well suit him. You've seen with the likes of Mohamed Salah, when people start doubting Salah, he comes back with a bang. It’s certainly very, very early to be writing Son off because he's a Premier League icon and a real legend. So, it'll be very, very interesting, but I suspect he might well stay on for another six months.”
