Son Heung-min shares heartfelt 11-word Tottenham message from treatment table
The Spurs captain missed out on the Europa League quarter final second leg due to injury.
Tottenham Hotspur secured a vital 1-0 win away at Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night in Europa League quarter final to book a place in the semis, and that was all achieved without club captain Son Heung-min.
Dominic Solanke was partnered by Mathys Tel and Brennan Johnson in an attacking three. The former AFC Bournemouth man was the difference maker, netting from a penalty late in the first half.
That goal was enough to secure a 2-1 win on aggregate for Ange Postecoglou’s side, who now prepare to face Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi final with all eyes on the chance to lift a major piece of silverware. The mood around North London is buoyed by that victory and it was certainly felt by Son, who didn’t make the trip to Germany.
Son Heung-min posts heartfelt Tottenham Hotspur message
It’s the first time the South Korea international has missed a match in the European competition since October. Son was also absent against Wolves in Premier League action last weekend as the side were defeated 4-2 in a disappointing result.
Watching from home, Son took to social media after full-time to share a heartfelt message of pride to his teammates. Posting on his Instagram story, the talisman said: “So so proud all of you!! Well done!! Let’s keep going.”
Son has three goals and one assist in the Europa League this season, playing 649 minutes across the tournament for Postecoglou’s side so far. There is hope that the captain will be fit again to play in the semi-final.
Ange Postecoglou on Son injury
The winger has a foot injury and had been touted to return in time to play Eintracht Frankfurt but did not recover in time. Speaking at his pre-match press conference at Deutsche Bank Park on Wednesday, Postecoglou said: "Sonny didn't travel in the end, he's the only one that misses out.
"He's been battling with his foot problem for a few weeks now and managed [to play] through it. He trained the last few days, he tried to train yesterday and it wasn't right so we made the decision to leave him at home to allow him to recuperate and see the best mode of recovery for him."
Tottenham Hotspur triggered an extension in Son’s contract at the club in January, keeping him in London past the end of this season and until 2026. The 32-year-old joined the side in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and will have spent a decade at the club come the end of the campaign.
Speaking about Son’s continued importance, Postecoglou has said: "He's a huge influence for us on and off the pitch. He's working hard for the team. Last night he played his part in creating a lot of opportunities. Our front three were really disciplined. He is hugely important to the club and what we are doing at the club."
