Tottenham now 'considering' transfer battle with Man Utd for 'top striker' who scored 47 goals in 51 games

Tottenham are being linked with a former Premier League striker who could return to England.

Tottenham are being linked with another striker as they look to add competition for Dominic Solanke this summer. Thomas Frank is hoping to put his own stamp on his new squad ahead of the new season, and more depth is going to be required ahead of a Champions League campaign.

Spurs struggled with injuries last season, and there are a number of positions that need more depth, including up top, with departures expected in the front line.

Heung-min Son appears to have an offer from LAFC in MLS, and he is set to make a decision over his future in the next couple of weeks, while Richarlison is being heavily linked with a departure after struggling with injuries last season.

A number of strikers have been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, and the latest is former Fulham and Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic. Mitrovic has spent two years with Al-Hilal, scoring 47 goals in 51 league games, and he still has just under a year remaining on his current deal.

According to CaughtOffside, Tottenham are one of many clubs considering a deal to sign Mitrovic, who could return to the Premier League at age 30. It’s claimed Mitrovic is being eyed by Spurs, Manchester United and Newcastle United.

The striker said last year that he was enjoying life in Saudi Arabia, telling local media: “After seven years in England I think the first thing was the sun. I never had summer sun in my life. It’s been different you know, different culture, different football, the mentality of people as well, but so far I’m really happy. My family is happy. The club is amazing. So far, it’s a great experience and looking forward to more years.”

It’s unclear what his stance over a Premier League return would be, but he left with his stock high after scoring 97 goals in 173 league appearances for Fulham, though a chunk of those goals were scored in the Championship.

Fulham star Bernd Leno said of Mitrovic in 2022: “He’s full of confidence and full of quality, the way he plays and keeps the ball, and the way he scores goals is exceptional. He’s so important for us — probably the most important player for us — so we’re really happy to have him here. I spoke to the Arsenal guys a couple of days ago and they said, ‘He so tough to play against’. We’re so happy to have him.”

Former Fulham striker Louis Saha said in the same year: "He's shown he's a top striker wherever he's been. He's got an amazing number in a really tough league. There's a lot of modern players now, for instance fake wingers that don't cross balls. So to have a number nine that is scoring that many goals, a kind of old-fashioned type, it shows he's very clever as to where he positions himself He's showed a lot of consistency and that he's a top, top striker. It's been an amazing year for him."

Tottenham need an alternative to Solanke, and they can certainly do a lot worse than Mitrovic, though, it could be argued that both strikers are relatively similar in their playing style, so they may be better off signing a true alternative who plays with a different style. Then again, if Son and Richarlison both leave, Spurs are going to need more than one new striker signing.
