One of Tottenham’s best performers is being linked with a move away from the club ahead of the summer.

Tottenham could have a situation on their hands this summer with one of their best players being linked with a move away from the club. Spurs centre-back Cristian Romero hasn’t had an easy time with injuries this season, like many of his teammates, but he remains one of their most important players.

Ahead of the summer, Romero is being linked with a move to Spain, reportedly attracting interest from a couple of clubs. Here we round up the latest surrounding the Argentine and his future with the summer transfer window fast approaching.

Atletico Madrid interest and surprise Tottenham stance

A fresh report from GiveMeSport has claimed that La Liga title hopefuls Atletico Madrid are interested in a deal to sign Romero, hoping to strengthen their back-line this summer. It’s claimed Atleti are willing to pay around £33million to get the Argentine, although it’s unclear how much Tottenham will ask for.

But the report does add that Spurs will consider selling Romero for the right price this summer, which is a surprise given his importance to the team and the lack of depth at centre-back, especially with Radu Dragusin out until the end of the calendar year. Romero is under contract until 2027, too, so Spurs are not in a position where they need to contemplate a sale or a new deal, which adds an element of mystery to the claim.

Romero’s reported stance

Romero may have a decision to make if there is genuine interest in his services this summer. he is clearly an ambitious player who is not delighted about the fact Tottenham look a long way away from winning big titles.

According to TBR Football, though, Romero has not taken any decision over his future and he will consider all his options heading into the summer before making a judgement call.

Romero’s hierarchy jibe

Romero got in a spot of bother earlier this season when he admitted "something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realise it,” publicly criticising those in charge of the club.

Though, he has since apologised, with Ange Posteoclou saying: “He realises that a lot of what he said was good but some wasn't the right way of dealing with it. The same way I wouldn't criticise a player publicly. I've spoken to Cristian about it and he's apologised for it. It wasn't the right way to do it. It shows he cares. There's a way to do it and this wasn't it."

Interest elsewhere

Various reports in Spain and elsewhere have reported that Real Madrid are interested in a deal for Romero this summer. Los Blancos only have David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger under contract for another year, while Eder Militao has struggled with injuries, so a long-term solution at centre-back is likely to be sought this summer.

Romero is being tipped as one of the options, still only 26 years of age. Genuine interest from Los Blancos would surely turn Romero’s head, at least to the point of him having the discussion with Tottenham.
