All the latest on one of the most significant injury concerns at Tottenham as they prepare to face Aston Villa.

Tottenham have been dealt a potential injury blow in the form of Micky van de Ven, who has established himself as one of the club’s most important players. The rapid centre-back is key to Spurs’ defensive effort and will be a huge miss if he misses Sunday’s clash with a dangerous Aston Villa side.

It has been a disappointing start for Tottenham who currently find themselves in eighth place, already five points off top four. The Villa clash will be a huge test, and there is no doubting Tottenham could do with their best centre-back. Here we take a look at the situation.

What Postecoglou has said

Postecoglou has said the van de Ven situation is unclear at this stage, although it is another hamstring injury that is currently causing him pain.

The Spurs boss said: “Micky felt something in his hamstring. I haven’t got the full update on him but he definitely felt something and we’ll see how he is. It’s not a bad one like last time that kept [van de Ven] out for quite a while.”

Van de Ven’s injury history

The Dutchman has suffered two previous hamstring injuries during his time at Tottenham and three in his senior career. His last two kept him out for 18 days and 56 days respectively. Postecoglou’s comments suggest this one is not a bad injury, but Tottenham will want to be careful not to take any serious risks.

The issue with hamstring injuries, and especially with players who run at the speed van de Ven does, is that hamstrings are very susceptible to worsen when aggravated or injured. Van de Ven could be set for a long spell on the sidelines if he plays too soon and suffers a significant injury.
