Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has slammed Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris after their loss to Aston Villa. Antonio Conte’s side were beaten 2-0 by the Midlands outfit after second-half goals by Emi Buendia and Douglas Luiz.

Lloris, who made his first start since helping France reach the World Cup final, was at fault for the first goal after failing to catch a seemingly comfortable long-range shot by Luiz which was ultimately costly. The hosts couldn’t get themselves back into the game and are now two points off the Champions League spots.

Souness delivered his verdict on their number one after the match and said:

“I am not a big fan of Hugo Lloris, I’ve said it for a long time. He’s made four errors leading to goals since the start of last season, the most of any goalkeeper in the Premier League. For me, he is past his sell-by date.”

Lloris, who is now 36-years-old, has played for Spurs since 2012 and has been their first choice for the past 10-and-a-half seasons, making 437 appearances in all competitions. Prior to his move to England, he played for Ligue 1 pair OGC Nice and Lyon.

His contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires in June 2024 meaning Conte needs to starting thinking about potential long-term replacements. Number two Fraser Forster played on Boxing Day in the 2-2 away draw at Brentford but he is only two years younger.

Lloris will be eager to bounce back from his mistake on Wednesday as Spurs take on Crystal Palace home. The Eagles go into that one on the back of their 2-0 away victory over AFC Bournemouth this weekend.
