Newcastle United have been handed another injury concern ahead of their game against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, December 10 after club captain Jamaal Lascelles suffered a dead leg in the Magpies' 3-0 away defeat against Everton on Thursday evening.

While Eddie Howe said that the injury is not a 'serious one' it is unclear if the defender will be able to play against Spurs - possibly leaving the Toon down to their bare bones at the back.

Newcastle are currently plagued with injuries - they have 13 senior team players who are unavailable for selection for a litany of reasons. Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, Callum Wilson, Elliot Anderson, Sean Longstaff, Sven Botman, Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes, Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett are all unavailable due to injury - on top of this, Sandro Tonali is also serving a footballing ban for breaching betting regulations.

This could prove to be a vital boost for Spurs. Ange Postecoglou's men are currently in rotten form after a brilliant start to the 2023-24 Premier League season, having lost four of their last five games in England's top division.

What did Eddie Howe say regarding Newcastle's injury concerns?

Speaking after the game on Lascelles' injury, Howe said: "I don't think it's a serious one. I think it's a dead leg which is a knock to [Lascelles'] thigh I think. Fingers crossed he'll be OK but I don't know at this moment. We have to be better but yes there are reasons behind every performance and we have struggled to change our game in running to try without the attacking options we feel we need. That's not there for us and it's a big miss. We've got outstanding players that aren't there for us. The longer it goes on the harder it gets but that's not to say it's impossible."

Speaking on Friday in his pre-Spurs press conference, he added: "When you’re in my shoes you can only control what you can control and some of the injuries we’ve had have just been things we’ve had no control over. We’re missing not just some big players, but big personalities as well, that make a difference within the group.

“But I have to say that I think the players have done so well to cope mentally with it. We’ve beaten some big teams with a hugely-reduced squad and that should give us real confidence for what’s ahead. If we can add some players back and they’re in good condition, that would give us a huge lift.”
