Former Tottenham Hotspur player Harry Kane has been linked with a return to the Premier League this summer

Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham says Harry Kane joining Arsenal this summer would be “nightmare scenario for every single” Spurs fan.

The former Spurs striker left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth £86.4m with add-ons. Bayern failed to win any major trophies in Kane’s first season but the German club are closing in on the Bundesliga title this time around. They sit six points clear of reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen with 28 games played. Kane spent some time in the Arsenal academy as a youngster but joined Spurs as a kid in 2004 and remained - excluding any loan moves - there until his move to Bayern.

According to reports earlier this season, Kane has a release clause in his Bayern contract that can be triggered for £54m. This will not become active until January 2026 but has sparked speculation of a Premier League return. He has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal but it also does open the door for a potential return to Spurs.

Teddy Sheringham discusses possible Harry Kane move to Arsenal

In an interview with casinoapps.com, Sheringham said: “Yes, he might be coming to the latter stages of his career, but he's still a top footballer, he's still playing for England, he's still scoring goals for England, he's still scoring goals in the top leagues in world football, in the Champions League, so if that (signing for Arsenal) happened that would really hurt.

“I mean that is something that can't happen. Even to think about it happening would hurt Tottenham, if an approach was made, and you have to hear about Harry mulling over that situation? Oof. It could never happen in a million years could it? That would be a nightmare scenario for every single Tottenham fan in the world.”

Kane has 213 goals in the Premier League for Tottenham and has continued to find the back of the net in Germany. He has scored 78 goals and provided 24 assists in 85 games for Bayern.

Could Harry Kane really join Arsenal?

After news emerged of his release clause, Kane said: "What I can say is that I'm very happy at FC Bayern. No comment on the clause."

Then, in early April, he addressed the rumours of a Premier League return. He said: “[There are] a few random stories out there for sure, yeah. I don’t know where they come from, but for sure I’m happy here at Bayern Munich.”

Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United will all be in the market for a new striker in the summer but Kane is not at the top of the any of the lists for those clubs. Liverpool are eyeing Alexander Isak while Arsenal want Viktor Gyökeres with fresh links to Lautaro Martínez this week. United’s preferred target is Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap. He is set to be available for just £30m once the Tractor Boys are relegated back to the Championship and he has also been linked with Chelsea.
