Former Tottenham star has 'willingness' to make Spurs return as £54m release clause opens door
Reports emerged recently suggesting that the striker will have a £54m release clause in Summer.
Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke signed in the summer for a hefty fee of £55 million, but has struggled with injuries as of late, as he remains out with a knee issue.
The English striker joined from Bournemouth and has netted seven Premier League goals in 18 games for Spurs. They also added Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich in the January transfer window.
Solanke was signed as a long-term replacement for Harry Kane, who left for Bayern in 2023 for £79m, but there is a chance that he could return to the Premier League in the summer.
Harry Kane ‘willing’ to return to Spurs
Kane has continued his strong scoring form since joining the Bundesliga side. He netted 44 goals in 45 games last season for Bayern, and has 29 goals in 30 games for Vincent Kompany’s side so far this season.
The 31-year-old is also Tottenham and England’s all time top goal scorer, making him one of the most valuable assets in world football. However, reports have emerged suggesting that a return to Spurs is very possible for the England captain. According to Journalist Ben Jacobs, Kane’s future at Bayern is uncertain, and that Tottenham hold an agreement in place, giving them priority over other buying clubs if they were to make a bid for Kane.
Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “I think if Kane returns to the Premier League, there is a willingness to go back to Spurs. That's not been ruled out by the player.
“We have to wait and see if there's an appetite for Tottenham to do that deal, especially with Dominic Solanke.”
The report continues to say that Tottenham would have to pay Kane’s £54m release clause which is set to become active during the summer transfer window, when the England international will hopefully have landed his first league title with the German club. The fact a release clause exists opens the door early for Spurs if they decide to pursue a deal as they will only be required to trigger the £54m in order to begin talks with Kane over potential personal terms.
Tottenham could sign Kane instead of Mathys Tel
Spurs signed Tel on loan from Bayern in January with a £45m option to buy the 19-year-old come the end of the season. Considering that is just £9 million less than Kane’s release clause, Daniel Levy could instead opt to bring the club legend back to North London rather than activate the option in Tel’s contract.
There is a big age gap between the two players, but Spurs would get a proven goal scorer who may be able to finally help them to get over the line and win a trophy under Ange Postecoglou. During a press conference in November, the Spurs boss said: “Don’t get me wrong, if Harry was here, I’d be a very happy manager. We’d find a way to fit him in!”
Kane netted 213 Premier League goals during his time at Tottenham, there is a chance he could come back and target Alan Shearer’s 260 record, as the all time top scorer in the competition.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson tipped Kane to return to the Premier League with a shock move to the Emirates.
