With Liverpool going 3-0 up after just 15 minutes thanks to goals from Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and a Mo Salah penalty, TV pictures on Sky Sports showed Spurs supporters began to file out of the ground.

In a tongue-in-cheek reference to having their tickets paid for by Tottenham players after that battering in the North East - which finished 6-1 to Eddie Howe’s side - the visitors in the stands chanted ‘we want our money back’ as Liverpool nothed up the goals.

And with some fans leaving the ground when Salah slotted in a 14th minute sport kick after Cristian Romero had felled Cody Gakpo just inside the box Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, responding to Martin Tyler’s reminder of what happened at St James’ Park, cheekily replied: “I know Spurs players are paid a lot of money. They’ll need to set up a direct debit to keep giving back to fans.”

That goal from Salah meant that at that stage, Tottenham had already conceded 11 goals in the space of a week having also drawn 2-2 with Manchester United on Thursday.
