Son admitted he was surprised to be handed the armband but was going to work hard for the overall success of the team. He responded after being named captain ahead of the Premier League opener against Brentford: “It’s such a big honour to captain this huge club.

“It was a big surprise and a very proud moment. I’ve already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch. It’s a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband.”

The South Korean has scored 145 goals since joining the club in 2015 and turned down an offer to move to Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer.

Son is widely regarded as one of the icons of Tottenham and his acceptance speech has lifted the team’s mood ahead of their trip to Brentford for the Premier League opener.

The north London’s club 1-0 home defeat by Everton in 2020 is the only time in the past seven seasons they have lost their opening league match so Ange Postecoglou will be quite optimistic as they visit the team that finished one place above them last time out.

Tottenham manager will also be able to count on Richarlison at the Gtech Community Stadium despite news earlier reports claiming he was injured.
