Alan Shearer slams Tottenham player for 'howler' in first half against Aston Villa
Jacob Ramsey opened the scoring for Aston Villa against Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was slammed for a ‘howler’ moment just one minute into the FA Cup clash with Aston Villa on Sunday night.
The Villains took the lead through Jacob Ramsey with just one minute on the clock, making it a disastrous start for Spurs just days after an embarrassing performance in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Ange Postecoglou’s side are looking to bounce back from that cup exit but now face being dumped out of another tournament. It was defensive errors that cost the London outfit dear at Anfield and little has changed in a few days.
Morgan Rogers found plenty of space in the middle of the park early on and ate up ground before slotting Ramsey through the Tottenham Hotspur defence with ease. The 23-year-old fired towards Spurs goalkeeper Kinsky, the ball hitting the shot-stopper and then the back of the net.
Tottenham star criticised for Aston Villa ‘howler’
Speaking on commentary for BBC Sport, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers legend Alan Shearer said: “An absolute howler from the goalkeeper. I don’t need to see it again. I can look at him and see his reaction but what I do know is Morgan Rogers is in that no. 10 position again. No-one marking him, the touch, he drives his team forwards and then puts it into the path.
“That is straight into the goalkeeper. He really should be doing better there. Yes, it’s on target and it’s got power behind it but the keeper should be doing much better.”
Kinsky has a back four of Djed Spence, Archie Gray, Kevin Danso and Pedro Porro in front of him. The only change in that defence from Thursday sees Porro return to the starting XI in favour of Ben Davies. Gray has moved into centre-back to facilitate for that change.
Tottenham Hotspur signed Kinsky from Slavia Prague in a deal worth about £12.5m at the start of January amid the injury battle of Guglielmo Vicario. The 21-year-old has already made eight Spurs appearances, conceding 12 in those outings.
Postecoglou praise for Kinsky
Lacking top flight experience, Kinsky has come under criticism for some showings but has retained the backing of Postecoglou. In January, when asked specifically how the new man would cope with corners, the Aussie praised the player’s impact: "It’s more to do with mindset in that he’s prepared to embrace that challenge, and the challenge we found in the last game [against Tamworth] when we found out just how strong they are on offensive set pieces and the players they’ve got in terms of both delivery and execution.
"You need to be well organised but you also need your goalkeeper to play a pivotal role. So far what I’ve seen of him he’s embraced those challenges. It’s not easy going to a place like Tamworth and they’re throwing balls literally under the crossbar and you’ve got about 20 bodies around you.
"And as much as it’s about technical ability its more about mindset and tackling that and he didn’t shy away from it. That really helped us because it gives confidence to the players around him because they know if it’s in his area he’s going to come for it and they can focus on their job.”
