QPR 'bid rejected' by Championship rivals as Millwall 'finalise' West Brom transfer - round-up

Millwall star Japhet Tanganga has completed a move to Sheffield United this week after a summer of transfer speculation.

QPR are reported to have made an approach for Southampton defender Ronnie Edwards following an impressive loan spell at Loftus Road last season.

The 21-year-old spent the back-end of the 2024/25 campaign with the R’s and turned heads with his commanding performances at the heart of defence. Edwards made 22 appearances for the club and nailed down a place in the starting XI, scoring goals against Derby County and Oxford United.

After being thrashed 7-1 by Coventry City last weekend, it appears that QPR are making moves to bolster their defence. Amadou Mbengue has already arrived from Reading on a free transfer but there is a feeling that another centre-back is needed with Jake Clarke-Salter struggling with injury.

QPR see Southampton approach rejected

The Daily Echo reports that QPR saw their bid for Edwards rejected by Southampton. The Saints paid £3 million to sign the rising star from Peterborough United last summer but he has made just five appearances for the side.

The report claims that Southampton do not intend to sell the player but that the right bid would be hard to turn down. Edwards played 80 minutes in the opening fixture of the Championship season against Wrexham but has been an unused substitute against Ipswich Town and Stoke City. He did play 90 minutes of Carabao Cup action against Norwich on Tuesday night.

Speaking about the player last season, as he was also deployed in defensive midfield, former QPR head coach Marti Cifuentes said: “We know he is a very technical defender and actually he has played before in this number-six role. The reason behind it was that he has been here just a few days, it was a difficult game because of the way Luton play very direct and with players that can run in behind.

"It’s not easy as a defender in that kind of game and we thought it would be a good introduction for him to start with some minutes in midfield. We wanted to get him into the rhythm of the game and then drop him into his more natural position. He didn’t put a foot wrong. He did really well and showed that he’s a quality player. Hopefully, he will help us a lot.”

Millwall sell Japhet Tanganga to Sheffield United

Meanwhile, Millwall are finalising a transfer move for West Brom star Caleb Taylor following the sale of Japhet Tanganga to Sheffield United. Journalist Dan Marsh wrote on X: “Exclusive: #Millwall in the process of finalising a deal to sign Caleb Taylor from #WBA. 22yo central defender set to undergo a medical. Taylor a long-term target + Millwall have made their move following sale of Japhet Tanganga to Sheffield United.”

Taylor is a product of the Baggies academy and spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers. Taylor has been an unused sub in each of West Brom’s opening three Championship fixtures.

Tanganga had been a mainstay in the Lions defence since initially making the loan move from Spurs in 2024. The defender played 90 minutes against Norwich City and Middlesbrough this season but was absent from the squad against Sheffield United and Coventry City amid transfer talk.

The switch to Bramall Lane has now been confirmed, with a £10 million fee reported by Football League World. In his first words after arriving at the club, Tanganga explained the reason behind his decision and thanked Millwall for the chance to be playing regular football.

He told the Sheffield United club website: "Sheffield United is a big club with a lot of history. I am just excited to be here, and I can't wait to get started. The club was so close last season, it's a great group of players. Sometimes in your career you have to make certain decisions, and I think this one is the right one for me.

"I've spoken to the manager and he's shown me the way he wants to play and how he sees me playing and fitting into the team. The players here are amazing, I've seen them, I've played against them and, like I said, I'm just excited to get started.

"After leaving (Spurs) it was important that I went somewhere where I had that platform to play week in, week out. Millwall gave me that, and that's all I wanted to do. I just want to continue that up here now at Sheffield United."
