QPR and Sheff Weds sent mocking 18-word transfer response by League One manager

QPR and Sheffield Wednesday had been linked with a move for the Rotherham United defender.

Recruiting in defence could be a key mission for QPR this summer with star centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter supposedly a transfer target for clubs including Premier League side Wolves and Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.

The 26-year-old is a pillar of Marti Cifuentes' R's defence and would leave a big hole to fill. QPR had been linked with a move for Rotherham United man Cameron Humphreys as a potential placement following the Millers' relegation to League One.

It appeared to be a viable deal for the London outfit, with Sheffield Wednesday also rumoured to be looking at the player. Humphreys made 25 league appearances for Rotherham United last term and has just one year left on his current deal, which could tempt the club to cash in should an offer come their way.

However, Rotherham boss Steve Evans has now spoken out about the links and appeared to quash any reports of Championship interest in the star. When asked about the rumours, he joked to the Rotherham Advertiser: “If he's mentioned with Wednesday then I’m not surprised if he’s mentioned with Thursday and Friday as well.

“Cameron has been really good for me in the three games he’s played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”

The defender began his career at Manchester City and progressed through the youth system before moving to Zulte Waregem in Belgium. He joined Rotherham United in 2022 and has made 67 appearances for the club.

His season last term was impacted by a tear close to the tendon in October. That was described by then Millers manager Matt Taylor as 'about as serious a hamstring injury as you can get', keeping him out of action until February.

Rotherham manager Evans was only reappointed by the club in April, returning for his second spell having previously led the side between 2012 and 2015. He is known to be a fan of Humphreys, previously naming the player among two others as 'ones that stand out to me' in his early weeks at the club.
