Millwall are vying with Hull City to bring the former Championship winner back to the second tier this month.

Millwall have made experienced Nottingham Forest defender Willy Boly a January transfer target according to fresh reports, days after interest from Wolves in Lions centre-back Japhet Tanganga.

AfricaFoot names Millwall and Hull City as Championship clubs holding an interest in signing Boly this January. The 33-year-old is out of contract at The City Ground this summer and it is thought the high-flying top flight side could take their chance to cash in on the player.

Boly has played just 113 minutes in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest this season as Nuno Espirito Santo's side turn heads. Forest sit third in the table, ahead of Chelsea, Newcastle United and Manchester City.

The Ivory Coast international started the opening game of the season against AFC Bournemouth but had been limited to just three cameos off the bench since. The former Wolves and Porto man has made 124 appearances in the Premier League and would arrive in the Championship with bags of experience.

Boly has played 36 times in the Championship, while at Wolves. In those outings he scored three goals and helped the club to promotion as champions in 2018.

Defensive solidity had become a trademark of the Millwall side under Neil Harris before his departure from The Den. The 23 goals conceded by the London outfit in the league is the best record of any side in the bottom half of the table, with only five sides in the top half conceding fewer.

That may point to Millwall needing to focus investment in other areas but links with Boly come just days after reports that Premier League side Wolves could target centre-back Tanganga. The player, who signed as a free agent from Spurs last summer following his loan, has been a mainstay for the Lions this term and turned heads with his performances.

Japhet Tanganga wanted by Premier League club

The Express claimed last week that Wolves are 'weighing up a bid' for Tanganga to help their Premier League survival battle. RB Leipzig were also named as potential suitors. A Tanganga exit would be worrying for Millwall given his importance to the side so far this term.

New Wolves boss Vitor Pereira is said to view the player as the answer to his team's defensive frailties but is aware that Tanganga would not be sold for cheap. His transfer plans could be helped by Harris' departure, with the former Millwall head coach known to have a close relationship with the defender.

Speaking in November, Harris said: "I get on brilliantly with Japh. I just promised him rhythm, games, doing the best we can to keep him fit and giving him a platform to enjoy his football, and to restart and kickstart his career again, because he’s a Premier League player all day long, we all know that. We want him on the pitch every week and he knows his place in the team. I know what he’s excellent at, which is pretty much everything."

The report adds that Tanganga 'is happy to see out' the season at The Den but there is an agreement between the player and the club that any Premier League bid be considered in January. It is added that the defender would be more tempted by a return to the Premier League than a move overseas.
