Birmingham City are prepared to break their own freshly-set League One record for the Fulham man.

Fulham have been sent a record-breaking £9 million bid for striker Jay Stansfield by League One outfit Birmingham City today in what could be a sensational Deadline Day move.

The Blues have enjoyed a free-spending summer after relegation to the third tier, already splurging around £14 million. The Midlands outfit broke the division's transfer record in the process by spending £4 million on Christoph Klarer.

Now, Birmingham City are looking to break their own recently set record by splashing more than double the amount on Fulham man Stansfield. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at St Andrew's but his 12 league goals couldn't help the side beat the drop.

talkSPORT reports that a £9 million bid has now been sent to Craven Cottage on the final day of a transfer market that has seen Birmingham City linked with a move for the player throughout. Stansfield was at St Andrew's on Tuesday as the Cottagers beat the League One outfit 2-0 in the Carabao Cup, the former Blues man bagging the second goal.

Speaking after the match, Stansfield said: "It was only four months ago the last time I was here - last season they made me feel welcome from day one, I made it my home for the season, my family loved it here, I loved it here. So I thought it was respectful to show respect to the fans who loved me for the season.

“I tried everything last season to do my best and keep them in the league, and that obviously didn’t work out, but they gave us a good game tonight, passing the ball around, and I think Birmingham will go places.”

Stansfield was then asked if he felt he would have the chance of gametime at Fulham and replied: “Yeah I think so. It’s all in my hands and I've got to use games like this to get minutes in me and show the gaffer what I can do and just see where that takes me. I’m contracted to Fulham, I've got four years left there."

Birmingham City have already made two head-turning striker signings this summer. The first came in bringing last year's League One top scorer Alfie May to the club for £800,000.

This week, the club then added Lyndon Dykes to their ranks from Championship side QPR for £1 million - the forward a Scotland international and the R's top scorer in all competitions last term.

Fulham boss Marco Silva this week said he was 'almost 100% sure' Stansfield would stay at the club and praised his 'quality'. However, a new record-breaking bid could test the London side's resolve.
