'Ate them alive' - What Erik ten Hag, Arne Slot and rival bosses have said about Crystal Palace this season
A look at what rival bosses have said after games against Crystal Palace so far this season.
Crystal Palace have endured a difficult start to the Premier League season, currently sat in the bottom three having failed to win any of their first seven games. It has been a frustrating time for Oliver Glasner and his men, who are battling to turn their season around heading into the international break.
The Eagles have picked up some good draws, but they fell short against Liverpool last time out and remain in search of their first league win. Here we take a look at what rival bosses have said after games against Palace so far this season.
Brentford 2-1 Crystal Palace
Thomas Frank: “I’m feeling unbelievable! We’re sitting here, in the sun, it’s a lovely Sunday afternoon, and we just got three points in the Premier League - there are very few things that can match that feeling. It was a tough game, against a good Crystal Palace side. The first 20 minutes, we started badly - or credit to Palace for starting well - then we grew back into the game, and got better and better; we scored an unbelievable goal.
“The second half started a little bit back and forth, Palace probably edged it, but, despite getting through that lower-performance spell, we conceded a goal we should have avoided. We kept fighting, kept staying in the game, and the substitutions - especially [Mikkel] Damsgaard and [Keane] Lewis-Potter - did very well, in terms of changing the game. And then we scored a very nice goal... there was a little deflection but they all count! It was a fairly even game but we managed to edge it, which is a big quality.”
Crystal Palace 0-2 West Ham
Julen Lopetegui: "We are happy to achieve three points against a very good team, with good players and a good manager with a big demand in the stadium. For a moment, we suffered in the first half, but we were able to overcome these moments and we have been resilient. After this, we deserve with the performance in the second half to win. We have to keep going and to think of the next challenge because it's going to be very fast.
"They were fighting a lot, competing, which is a demand you have in all the Premier League matches because this is the level. To be able to stay at this level is very important… I'm happy because they work very hard."
Chelsea 1-1 Crystal Palace
Enzo Maresca: “I feel it is a shame for the players because when we finished the game, you could see the players’ frustrations. In the way we played today, we are going to win games.
“We completely deserved to win the game. We created chances and controlled the game. We didn’t concede chances and in the first half, I think they just had one shot on goal with Adam Wharton and then they had the goal in the second half which was a fantastic goal. [We] completely deserved to win the game but unfortunately we didn’t. But the performance was very good, on the ball and off the ball.
“After we conceded the goal, we lost our way in terms of controlling the game and the game started to be a bit up and down and in transition, which is not our football and especially against them as they are very good in transition. But then after, we came back to the way we planned for the game and in the end we had two or three more chances to win the game. But we didn’t win the game and it is what it is.”
Crystal Palace 2-2 Leicester City
Steve Cooper: “We didn’t feel it (disallowed goal) was tight, asked for clarity and have seen images that showed he was clearly offside. We’ve had a massive error go against is and we don’t want it to go under the radar because that’s not fair on the players or the supporters.
“We had a massive error go against us, errors like that shouldn't happen and it's why we're changing to the semi-automated system. We felt very let down by it. We needed to stand up for the club and tell the Premier League what we thought."
Crystal Palace 0-0 Man Utd
Erik ten Hag: "When we don't win, I'm not content. We should have won. I think first half, we ate them alive. Then in the second half, it was more in the balance but first half, we should have scored one or two goals.
“We played very good. Total control of the game. In and out of possession, I think we played very good. The only thing was in the box, that is where the game is always decided. We should be more clinical there."
Everton 2-1 Crystal Palace
Sean Dyche: "Very pleased, a lot of hard work in the turnaround. We conceded a soft goal and we know we’ve got to correct that and we’ve done so well from that kind of situation. First phase and second phase set pieces. The reaction was superb, particularly second half to take the game on. Lots of work to be done of course but it's another restart for us."
He added: "When you haven’t got that first win you feel nervous. Then you go 1-0 down, the stadium becomes awkward for the players. I spoke to them in the second half about being someone who makes a difference. It’s every person that counts, not just one.”
Crystal Palace 0-1 Liverpool
Arne Slot: "Mostly for me it's special. Players go to their national team and they think of the national team, but for me if I lose it is three to four days of being unhappy. I think my wife will be happy as she will have someone home who is happy.
"Really satisfied with how we started the season. It is a good start not only the results, but I liked our performance today. There was a period of the game we conceded free-kicks and that was a difficult period. For the last 10 minutes we kept the ball very well."
