Just over an hour after he announced his departure, Roy Hodgson's replacement at Crystal Palace has been confirmed. 49-year-old Austrian manager Oliver Glasner has been appointed the new Eagles boss and is on a contract that sees him at Selhurst Park until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Reports of Hodgson being sacked emerged in recent weeks with Palace sitting 16th in the league with two successive defeats placing them just five points above the relegation zone. However, on Thursday, 76-year-old Hodgson was taken ill and after it was announced he had been released from hospital, the ex-Lions boss confirmed he would be stepping down from his role. Palace take on 18th placed Everton this evening.

Glasner became a household name after he lead Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League triumph in 2021/22 and secured the club's first continental trophy in more than 40 years. That campaign also saw Die Adler (The Eagles) go unbeaten in Europe as they eliminated Barcelona at Camp Nou. The Austrian manager began his coaching career with SV Ried - a club for whom he played well over 500 fixtures for during his on-pitch career - before heading to LASK in 2015. Glasner then headed to Vfl Wolfsburg where he led the side to the Europa League round of 16 and fourth place in the league, qualifying them for the next season's UEFA Champions League.

In May 2021, it was then announced he had joined Frankfurt where not only did he lead the side to Europa League victory, but he also oversaw the club reaching the Champions League round of 16 stages the following season. He has since been out of work since departing from the Bundesliga side at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Glasner has already spoken of his excitement at the new role saying on Palace's website: "I am very happy to join Crystal Palace F.C. as manager. I am looking forward to working with the talented squad, meeting the club’s supporters and experiencing the Selhurst Park atmosphere I have heard so much about. It has been a pleasure to meet with Steve and Dougie, and I am looking forward to working with them to achieve our goals."

Similarly, Palace's chairman Steve Parish has added to the announcement, saying: "I’m delighted to welcome Oliver to the club. He has an outstanding record, and we believe he is the right manager to take the club forward at this pivotal stage.

“Wherever Oliver has gone so far in his managerial journey, success has been quick to follow, and we believe his ambition, as well as his exciting and attacking approach, is the perfect fit for getting the most from our talented young squad in the remainder of this Premier League season and beyond.”

Palace will face Everton later tonight at Goodison Park before hosting Burnley this weekend in London.
